I'm the guy your family already calls about the computer.

I've been fixing computers for people I know for more than ten years. Friends, neighbors, my parents, my parents' friends. At some point enough people asked if I did it for a living that I started doing it for a living.

I work out of Philadelphia and I don't have a shop, which I think is the better way round. You don't unplug everything and drive across the city. I come to your kitchen table or your office, or I log in remotely and sort it out while you get on with your day.

The degrees came later. What I actually care about is that you understand what went wrong and what I did about it, in normal words, without feeling talked down to.

How I work, in four rules.

Nothing complicated. These are just the things I'd want from someone I hired.

    You get the price firstI tell you what it costs before I start. If the job changes, I stop and tell you before I keep going.

    Plain words, alwaysI'll explain what broke and what I did. If I use a word you don't know, that's my fault, and you should ask.

    I'll tell you when not to botherIf a repair costs more than the machine is worth, I'll say so. I'd rather you trust me than spend the money.

    I don't vanish afterwardsSame number, same person. If something's off a week later, call me and we'll sort it.

The other half of what I do.

Alongside the repair work I build and look after websites, and I run social media for a handful of businesses. It's the same instinct really: something needs to work properly, and someone has to actually own it.

I've built sites for a clothing label, an author, and a wellness studio here in the city, and I still look after all three. I also write iOS apps, which are live on the App Store. That part is mostly for me, but it does mean that when I say a website can do something, I know what's going on underneath it.
